Established by Paul Crowe OAM and the late Kevin Heinze in 1977, the Victorian Schools Garden Awards have a long history of bringing the joy of gardens and gardening to school aged children. Held annually, the Awards program recognises and rewards the achievements of students and school communities in their school gardens. Entries to the Awards open on the 1st March and close on the Friday 30th September 2019.
A review of the VGSA program in 2014 led to the introduction of a Grants program. Held in tandem with the Awards program, the Grants program is designed to encourage school to start new gardens and provides funding towards school’s garden projects. Applications for 2019 Grants open on the 1st March and close on the 30th April 2019.
The Awards and Grants programs are open to all State Government, Catholic and Independent Schools.
The VSGA also hosts and participates in Professional Development Workshops (PDW) for teachers, parents and volunteers with a focus on the development of sustainable school gardens. These PDWs provide advice and support to teachers in their crucial role as guides and mentors and showcase schools that are doing it right as examples for other schools to follow.
This year the VSGA has introduce this year a new Garden Support service to Victorian schools who need extra help. This service aims to connect schools with larger scale garden/project problems with a horticulture industry expert local to their school or with specific expertise for their problem.
